1876-1958. French painter, who began using
brilliant colour as an early member of the
Fauves, mainly painting landscapes. He later
abandoned Fauve colour. He also wrote poetry,
novels, and essays. Initially he was inspired
by van Gogh but by 1908 Cezanne had become
the chief influence. Vlaminck was a
multitalented eccentric: his pastimes
included cycling, playing the violin, and
farming.
